Heartland Trail – This 27-mile, multi-use, paved trail was Minnesota’s first rail-to-rail system and has become one if its best known and most popular bike routes. Cyclists travel between Walker and Park Rapids, traversing quiet forests, skirting ponds and lakes and passing over railroad trestles. The Heartland Trail also goes through the towns of Akeley, Nevis and Dorset.

The trail’s excellent birding terrain is a mix of jack pine, red and white pine, spruce and birch trees, all mixed with farmland and meadows.
